Rafferty Named New Senate Transportation Committee Chairman

John C. Rafferty, Jr. was named Senate Transportation Committee Chairman this week by Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati.  Rafferty takes over as chairman after the departure of former State Senator Rob Wonderling who is now the president of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. 

Rafferty represents Pennsylvania’s 44th Senatorial District, which includes parts of Berks, Chester and Montgomery counties.  Rafferty was first elected to the Senate in 2002 and was re-elected in 2006.  Prior to being elected to the Senate, Rafferty served as an attorney in private practice, focusing on education, real estate, zoning and business and estates law.  Rafferty also served as Deputy Attorney General for the Commonwealth from 1988 to 1991, where he was responsible for the Criminal Law Division and Grand Jury Investigations. 

Prior to being named Transportation Chairman, Rafferty served as a member of the Transportation Committee as well as a member of Appropriations, Banking and Insurance, Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure, and Judiciary committees.  He was also the past Chairman of the Senate Law and Justice Committee.

Senator Rafferty earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, a master’s degree from Beaver College, and his law degree from Temple University.
