This week APC, along with PennDOT and the PA Turnpike Commission, paused to remember those whom have lost their lives while working on our commonwealth’s highways. While the week of April 3, 2017 is set aside as a time to remember and raise awareness of the dangers highway workers face each and every day, APC is asking everyone to do their part and slow down in work zones each and every week of the year.
During a joint press conference Monday at PennDOT, APC’s Executive Vice President Robert Latham said, “Work zones present safety challenges, not only to construction crews, but to travelers. According to the Federal Highway Administration, 85 percent of work zone fatalities are travelers, not workers. The remedy is simple – just slow down and pay attention.”
APC is also renewing its call on the General Assembly to enact SB 172 as soon as possible. This legislation would allow for the use of automated speed enforcement in major interstate and turnpike work zones. The bill is currently before the PA Senate for consideration. APC and its partners ACPA, PACA and PAPA sent a joint letter to Senate Leaders and Transportation Committee members urging them to place SB 172 at the top of their agenda.
APC also offers other ways you can show your support for highway workers. You can purchase a “Slow Down. Highway Workers” license plate for $10 each. The entire amount is donated to the Langford Family Memorial Scholarship Fund. It is this fund that helps defray post-secondary education costs for family members of fallen highway workers.
