In the first week of the legislative session, the Senate Transportation Committee unanimously adopted Senate Bill 172 this week which would allow for the use of automated speed enforcement in work zones. Senate Bill 172 represents that same bill from last session (SB 840) that was adopted in the Senate but did not see action in the House before the General Assembly adjourned in November.
Specifically, the legislation authorizes automated speed enforcement in work zones and establishes a five-year pilot program on Interstate and limited access highway work zones. This legislation is critical to ensuring a greater level of protection to not only highway workers, but the motoring public as they move through construction zones.
SB 172 is a legislative priority for APC going into this session. The unanimous vote in the Senate Transportation Committee represents momentum on the issue and will be the basis for getting this bill to the Governor’s desk this year.
APC will continue to work with House and Senate leaders to ensure automated speed enforcement legislation continues to advance and will update the membership of its progress.
