Facing an impending funding shortage that was exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic, the highway construction industry has begun to lay the groundwork for a new initiative to assure that the Commonwealth and the federal government take the steps necessary to fund a sound transportation system.
Bob Latham, of Associated Pennsylvania Constructors, laid out several funding options in an appearance this week on Pennsylvania Newsmakers, hosted by Terry Madonna. The options begin with immediately halting the diversion of any funds intended to build and maintain bridges and highways.
Currently, more than $700 million is being diverted annually for non-transportation uses. Restoring that amount to the Motor License Fund, along with other steps, will provide Pennsylvania with the necessary resources, without having to raise fuel taxes again. To view Latham’s appearance, go here.
