PennDOT has issued a memorandum introducing an optional Supplemental Advance Notice Sign (SANS) to give motorists more warning about the Work Zone Speed Safety Camera (WZSSC) program. This change grew out of APC’s ongoing work with the Department on work zone safety improvements and reflects discussions underway in the Work Zone Safety Task Force.

The signs may be used on qualifying projects with long-term traffic patterns or long-term advance warning signs, mainly on interstate and limited-access highways with posted speed limits of 55 mph or higher. Contractors will be responsible for procuring, installing, and maintaining the signs, with placement coordinated through PennDOT districts. The supplemental signs add advance notice. They do not replace the temporary signs used during active speed camera deployments.

APC will keep working with PennDOT through the Task Force on practical steps like this to better protect the men and women working in our work zones.
