APC members are reminded of an important upcoming PennDOT deadline involving temporary traffic control devices.

Under PennDOT’s updated Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) Guidelines, Category 3 devices must have MASH 2016 approval by December 31, 2026. Category 3 devices include portable barriers, crash cushions, and truck-mounted attenuators (TMAs).

With the deadline approaching, contractors should review their existing Category 3 equipment and future equipment needs to ensure compliance with the MASH 2016 requirements.

Importantly, PennDOT recently advised APC’s Safety Committee that contractors with specific concerns regarding their ability to meet the December 31 deadline should contact PennDOT for review on a case-by-case basis. Members with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact Brian Crossley, Manager of PennDOT’s Temporary Traffic Control Unit, at 717-265-7562 or bcrossley@pa.gov. Members may also contact Jason Wagner at the APC office for assistance or to discuss any concerns regarding the deadline.
