On the Republican side of the State Senate, incumbents Sen. Camera Bartolotta, Sen. Lisa Baker, and Sen. Chris Gebhard all successfully defeated primary challengers and advanced to the fall election. Several of these races drew significant attention and resources, particularly in districts expected to remain important voices on transportation, economic development, and infrastructure issues in Harrisburg. In Lancaster County’s open Senate race, State Rep. Tom Jones secured the Republican nomination and now advances to one of the most closely watched Senate contests in the Commonwealth this fall.
On the other side of the building, several incumbents faced tough primary challengers and will not be returning to the State House next session. Representatives Greg Vitali (D), Keith Harris (D), Ana Tiburcio (D), and Bud Cook (R) all lost to challengers yesterday. Tiburcio is one of the more shocking, as she was recently sworn in after winning a Special Election just several months ago. In the lone Special Election to fill the partial term of former State Representative Seth Grove, Republican George Margetas defeated Democrat Ron Ruman. Both will reappear on the ballot in November to decide who will serve the full-term starting next year.
At the statewide level, Republican voters nominated Jason Richey for Lieutenant Governor, setting up a November matchup between the Shapiro/Davis ticket and Republican nominees Stacey Garrity and Jason Richey.
The election results also serve as an important reminder that engagement in the political process matters. Decisions made in Harrisburg directly impact transportation funding, permitting, workforce development, project delivery, work zone safety, and the long-term stability of Pennsylvania’s highway and bridge construction industry. Every election cycle presents an opportunity for our industry to ensure its voice is heard.
As attention now turns toward the November General Election, APC encourages all members and employees across the transportation construction industry to stay informed, participate in the electoral process, and engage with candidates on the issues that matter most to our industry and workforce.
